Unveiling KitKat's Sustainable Makeover

In a groundbreaking move, Nestlé has introduced its latest KitKat variant, crafted exclusively from cocoa beans cultivated by farmer families participating in the company's income accelerator scheme. This initiative, aimed at helping cocoa-producing communities achieve a living wage, marks a pivotal moment in the company's commitment to sustainable practices in the cocoa and chocolate industry.

Bridging the Income Gap: Nestlé's Progressive Program

Launched in January 2022, Nestlé's income accelerator program targets the living income gap of cocoa-farming families, simultaneously addressing the pressing issues of child labor and environmental sustainability. The program incentivizes families to enroll their children in school, adopt good agricultural practices, engage in agroforestry activities, and diversify their income streams.

Impactful Numbers: Making a Difference

Nestlé's income accelerator program has already made a substantial impact, supporting over 10,000 families in Ivory Coast. The program is set to expand its reach to Ghana, with a goal of including a total of 30,000 families by the end of the year. Looking ahead to 2030, Nestlé aspires to extend its program's benefits to an estimated 160,000 cocoa-farming families globally, creating a ripple effect of positive change at scale.

Tracing the Journey: Ensuring Transparency in Cocoa Sourcing

Nestlé has collaborated with partners and suppliers to revolutionize its global cocoa sourcing, achieving full traceability and physical segregation of cocoa from its income accelerator program. The cocoa mass adheres to the highest traceability standards, ensuring "mixed identity preserved" traceability, allowing for separate storage and tracking of cocoa beans throughout their entire journey.

KitKat's 'Breaks for Good' Initiative

Corinne Gabler, Head of Confectionery and Ice Cream at Nestlé, expressed enthusiasm about KitKat's involvement in the "Breaks for Good" initiative. This initiative not only aligns with KitKat's longstanding tradition of innovation but also places cocoa farmers at the forefront through the income accelerator program.

Market Availability: KitKat's Sustainable Indulgence

The KitKat "Breaks for Good" edition will hit store shelves in January 2024 across 27 European countries, with the UK and Ireland joining in from May 2024. Additionally, a limited-edition KitKat featuring 70% dark chocolate, sourced from the income accelerator program, has been introduced in the UK market as a pilot project.

Partnerships Paving the Way for Sustainability

Cargill, a committed partner in Nestlé's sustainability journey, expressed its dedication to supporting the company's long-term goals. Michiel van der Bom, Product Line Director Cocoa & Chocolate Europe West Africa at Cargill, highlighted the collaborative efforts to source sustainable ingredients, restore the environment, support families, and boost incomes.

Thierry Touchais, Manager, Strategic Accounts at the Rainforest Alliance, emphasized the encouraging shift in the industry, praising Nestlé's adoption of the 'mixed identity preserved' model. This model ensures cocoa traceability back to Rainforest Alliance-certified farmers engaged in Nestlé's income accelerator program, showcasing the potential for positive change in the cocoa and chocolate sector.
