As a precursor to this electric hot hatch, the ninth-generation, electric-only Golf is set to make its debut in 2028, riding on the company's SSP platform.

The concept revealed in September showcased a stylish five-door hatchback with a distinctive face and a contemporary rear end. Sporting ground effects, a lower bumper opening, and an aggressive rear diffuser, the ID. GTI exudes an athletic stance. Volkswagen has been tight-lipped about the nomenclature for its performance EV. The sketch accompanying the confirmation of the electric GTI's launch in 2026 hinted at a possible adoption of the original Golf's name. Additionally, the company has trademarked a new GTI logo, featuring a lightning bolt in place of the "I."

Derived from the ID.2all concept, which VW positioned as affordable as a Polo, pricing details are eagerly awaited. Although the compact Polo is not available in the US, its cost in Germany translates to approximately $23,500 in the US. Comparatively, the current gas-powered VW Golf GTI starts at $33,190 in the US. While an electric version may command a higher price, the dynamic landscape of EV pricing and the electric GTI's anticipated release several years down the road suggest potential shifts in affordability.
